SUSAN HUFTON

BIOGRAPHY:

Training: 1983-6 full-time study in calligraphy and bookbinding at Roehampton Institute of Higher Education (now Roehampton University). 1986-1987 Crafts Council Advanced Training Grant to study Letter carving. 

Elected Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) in 1987

Teaching experience includes: SSI’s Advanced Training Scheme, Short Course Tutor at West Dean College, Visiting Tutor on the BA course at Satakunnan University, Finland. Course convenor and calligraphy tutor of the Roehampton University Calligraphy Programme. Tutor for Foundation Degree in Calligraphy with Design, Sunderland University at Kensington Palace. 

Short courses, workshops and summer schools in the UK, Finland, Canada, USA, Japan and Australia.  

Writer and tutor of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators Calligraphy Correspondence Course.

Clients include private individuals and corporate businesses, churches and charities; painted lettering and calligraphy included in the V&A Museum, the Crafts Study Centre and the Fitzwilliam Museum's collections.

From 2000 - 2006 I was one of a small number of calligraphers working on the Saint John’s Bible for Saint John’s Minnesota.

I regularly write about calligraphy and my own work in calligraphy journals in the UK and overseas and for many years was editor of The Scribe, the journal of the SSI. My own book, Calligraphy Step-by-Step was published by Weidenfeld and Nicholson in 1997.

My calligraphy and lettering work consists mainly of commissioned pieces and work for exhibitions.
